About The Farm

We are an island hill farm in the north of Scotland, dedicated to raising rare and native breeds of British sheep.

Why we choose these special breeds:

  • Protecting Our Heritage: These breeds have been shaped by centuries of adaptation to the unique challenges of the Scottish landscape. By keeping them, we help to preserve a vital part of our agricultural heritage and ensure their continued existence for future generations.
  • Supporting Biodiversity: Our diverse flock contributes to the rich biodiversity of our island. These sheep graze on the hillsides, helping to maintain healthy grasslands and creating a mosaic of habitats for a variety of plants and animals.
  • Sustainable Farming: These hardy breeds are well-adapted to our environment and require minimal inputs. They thrive on natural grazing, minimising our reliance on artificial fertilisers and reducing our environmental impact.

What makes our wool special:

Our sheep produce exceptional wool due to their unique characteristics:

  • Longer Staple length: Ideal for spinning and creating beautiful, durable yarns.
  • Rich in natural lanolin: Providing natural waterproofing and insulation.
  • With some crimp or curl: Adding to the unique character and enhancing the insulating properties of the fleece.

Our Flock:

We keep the following breeds:

  • Shetland: Known for their hardiness and excellent fleece, perfectly adapted to the harsh island conditions.
  • Shetland cross Cheviot: A hardy and adaptable breed, well-suited to our challenging environment.
  • Boreray: A rare and unique breed native to the St. Kilda archipelago, renowned for its resilience and adaptability.
  • Icelandic: A long-haired breed with exceptional hardiness, well-suited to our harsh winters.
  • Hebridean: A black-faced breed with a distinctive appearance and a long, dense fleece.

By choosing to keep these rare and native breeds, we are not only producing high-quality wool but also contributing to the conservation of these valuable genetic resources and supporting the biodiversity of our local environment.
